Digging the Past: Exploring Fossils, Minerals & Archaeology

Saturday August 29 - 10 am - 4 pm
Falls of the Ohio State Park, 201 W. Riverside Drive, Clarksville, Indiana  47129
Visitors are invited to explore fossils, minerals, and archaeology with a variety of programs behind the Interpretive Center. Special consideration is being made for the pandemic. Masks required to approach tables. Parking - $2 per vehicle. Interpretive Center admission varies. Please call 812-280-9970 for more info.

Here’s what’s happening:
  • Our popular collecting piles will have (free) ticketed times every 30 minutes and social distance capacities this year with more smaller collecting piles
  • Refreshed Silurian and Devonian fossil piles courtesy Irving Materials, Inc. (IMI) & Bagshaw Trucking;  new minerals as well
  • Outer fossil bed hike (age 12 years+) starts at 9:30am
  • Hourly guided hikes - 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm
  • Talks / tips on collecting fossils (10:30am), minerals (11:30am), collecting tools (12:30pm), collecting safely (1:30pm), and collecting geodes (2:30pm)
  • Roving naturalists to help you discover the fossil beds for those who don’t want to join a hike
  • Create an “egg carton” geology collection
  • Make a weather rock or pet rock
  • Table top fossil & mineral displays
  • Dig “artifacts” in one of our archaeological mini-mock dig stations
  • Wade Tharp with the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology will have information and to help with identification of artifacts.
  • Get your unknown rocks and fossils identified
